Junior Servant Leader

Support scholars. Build your leadership.

Junior Servant Leaders support the care, learning, and development of scholars in Freedom Scholars Learning Center’s 2026–2027 Seed Sowers & Storytellers Afterschool Program.

JSLs work alongside Servant Leaders to support the Integrated Reading Curriculum, classroom activities, outside facilitators, and positive relationships with scholars, families, and the community. The role is designed for young people who are excited about education, youth leadership, mentoring, and community-based learning.

Typical work hours scheduled between 2:00–7:00 PM

What Junior Servant Leaders Do

  • Support Servant Leaders with Integrated Reading Curriculum lessons and classroom activities
  • Become familiar with lesson plans and help support their implementation
  • Help manage large-group and small-group instruction
  • Support outside facilitators and enrichment activities
  • Help with transitions and maintaining the daily program schedule
  • Assist with classroom setup, cleanup, organization, and materials
  • Help create a structured, supportive environment for scholars
  • Serve as a Harambee leader
  • Support team-building activities, outreach, and special events
  • Assist with classroom management and scholar supervision
  • Support program research and data collection when needed
  • Participate in daily debriefs, training, and professional development

Applicants should:

  • Be committed to children’s advocacy and the goals of FSLC
  • Be able to work as part of an intergenerational team
  • Be respectful of different cultures, experiences, and identities
  • Demonstrate maturity, reliability, and a positive attitude
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Be willing to learn about literacy instruction, classroom management, conflict resolution, and co-teaching
  • Be committed to equity, inclusion, and justice
Six-week literacy program
Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Serving ages 5–13 (completed kindergarten)
Reading and skill assessments
Afternoon activities, including outdoor games, team building, dance, and STEM gardening
