What to expect

Seed Sowers meets Monday through Thursday afternoons at St. Mark's & St. John's Church. Children in kindergarten through sixth grade learn together through reading, gardening, storytelling, and action research.

Location

We gather at St. Mark's & St. John's Church

Our home is at 1245 Culver Road. Freedom Scholars leaders meet scholars at School #33 at dismissal and walk together to the church.

Eligibility

Your child must be in kindergarten through sixth grade

Scholars accepted into the program must be available to participate for the full duration. Commitment to the program ensures the best experience for your child.

Transport

We provide transportation from School #33

Our leaders meet your child at dismissal and walk or ride the bus together to the church. If you can arrange your own transportation to the church, students from other schools are welcome to join.

Acceptance is first-come, first-serve

We strongly encourage families to attend parent orientation on September 19th at 6:00pm to guarantee your child's spot in the program.

Servant Leader Intern

College-age students and recent graduates play a vital role in the FSLC Summer Program. Servant Leader Interns are responsible for the direct care, supervision, and support of participating scholars.

Utilizing the Integrated Reading Curriculum, they facilitate classroom instruction and lead parent workshops and community outreach initiatives, helping to foster a positive and engaging learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver the Integrated Reading Curriculum to a designated class of scholars for six weeks during the summer, in alignment with standards established by the Children’s Defense Fund and the local program sponsor.
  • Prepare, maintain, and break down classroom space, including securing, cleaning, and organizing materials.
  • Collaborate with program staff to create and sustain a structured, supportive environment for all children.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with parents and families.
  • Serve as a Harambee Leader each day of program operations.
  • Lead afternoon activities and special events, patrolling community walks including chaperoning field trips.
  • Attend the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools National Training in Clinton, Tennessee.
  • Attend and participate in organization trainings and professional developments
  • Attend and actively participate in parent orientation and daily debrief sessions throughout the program.

‍Qualifications

  • Submission of a current rĂ©sumĂ©.
  • Must be 18–30 years of age and have completed at least one year of college coursework, with plans to complete a degree (or have already earned a degree).
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA (cumulative).
  • Demonstrated commitment to children’s advocacy and enthusiasm for Freedom Scholars Learning Center (FSLC).
  • Ability to motivate others and collaborate effectively within an intergenerational team.
  • Appreciation for diverse cultural histories and a commitment to openness and respect for all cultures.
  • Commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and maintains a mature, professional demeanor.
  • Excellent reading, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to the character, humility, and servant leadership principles exemplified by Ella Baker.
  • Effective conflict resolution skills and a positive self-concept.
  • Current voter registration.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check, including child protective clearances.
  • Submission of a current rĂ©sumĂ©.
Six-week literacy program
Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Serving ages 5–13 (completed kindergarten)
